Ecopath with Ecosim is a free ecological/ecosystem modeling software suite, which primarily is developed at the Fisheries Centre of the University of British Columbia. It was in 2007 named as one of the ów biggest scientific breakthroughs in NOAA’s 200-year history. The citation highlights that Ecopath “revolutionized scientists’ ability worldwide to understand complex marine ecosystems”. Behind this lies a couple of decades of development work followed closely with a strong dedication to user support and training, resulting in some 6000 registered users in 155 countries.
EwE has three main components: Ecopath – a static, mass-balanced snapshot of the system. The Ecopath software package can be used to,
Evaluate ecosystem effects of fishing;
Explore management policy options;
Analyze impact and placement of marine protected areas;
Predict movement and accumulation of contaminants and tracers (Ecotracer);
Model effect of environmental changes.
The core developers of EwE are: Villy Christensen (Project directions and programming), Carl Walters (Scientific development and programming), Sherman Lai (Oprogramowanie management and programming), Joe Buszowski (Core programming), Jeroen Steenbeek (Database and interface programming), and Joe Hui (Interface programming).
Development of the newest version, EwE6 is made possible primarily through support from the Lenfest Wielka woda Oprogramowanie and the Pew Charitable trusts.
